Sometimes They Move
Approximately three months ago, I was exposed to a duo by the name of Gilbert and George. This pair of “livig sculptures” insisted that everything they do is art as they often stated that they refuse to disassociate their art from their daily lives. They made The Singing Sculpture which was preformed in galleries across the U.K. This installation consisted of the two dancing to various songs such as Bend It as seen here. At first, I had no idea how to react to this piece. I initially felt as if I had walked in on the toys from Toy Story while they were living their lives. Sculptures are supposed to be objects, not people who are pretending to be objects that move. After thinking about it further, I realized that it made total sense. Take longboarding for example. If you look at the board by itself, it is just a pretty plank of wood with wheels. It is just an object until someone picks it up and gives it it’s own life. Once you pick up your board, it becomes an art form. You become an art form, a living sculpture.
